The living room is the only room where storage is judged twice. It has to work and it has to be worth looking at, and those two demands pull in opposite directions more often than people expect.
They pull apart because of what a living room accumulates. All of that on open shelving looks cluttered. All of it behind doors looks like a wall of cupboards in a room meant to be inviting.
The resolution is a ratio rather than a compromise. Roughly a third open and two thirds closed puts books and a few objects on display while everything with a cable on it lives behind a door. That single decision does more for how a living room reads than any finish choice.
The other difference is that this room has the most obstacles in it — a fireplace, a window, a bulkhead, a doorway, a stair, usually several at once. That is exactly where fitted cabinetry pulls away from anything you can buy, because a bought unit assumes a flat, empty, standard-length wall.

Book depth is 10 to 12 inches, not the 16 a media cabinet needs, so a bookcase built at media depth looks heavy and swallows floor. Span matters more: about 30 to 32 inches is a sensible limit for a shelf carrying a full row of books before it starts to bow, which is why long unsupported shelves are the commonest complaint about site-built bookcases.
Usually written off as unusable, and it need not be. A fitted seat beneath the window with drawers or lift-up storage underneath adds seating and storage without losing any daylight, and tall cabinets either side frame the view. In a bay, the volume under the seat is space no piece of furniture occupies neatly.
Every living room has one: the stretch interrupted by a doorway, a bulkhead over a beam, a heating vent, or the underside of a stair. Split-levels and 1½-storey houses through the older parts of Port Coquitlam produce these constantly. Under-stair volume in particular is a triangle that no bought furniture fits — built to the rake it becomes drawers at the tall end and pull-outs where the ceiling drops.
Worth designing for honestly rather than pretending otherwise. Under-stair drawers built to the rake. Integrated lighting in display sections, planned before the cabinetry rather than added to it. Where the living room opens into a dining or media area, the run can continue as an entertainment centre so the two read as one piece.
Living rooms get planned standing up and used sitting down, which is why televisions end up too high and open shelves end up above eye level where nobody looks at them. Sit in your usual seat and note what is at eye level on each wall. That line is where display shelving and the screen belong; everything below it can be closed storage, and everything well above it is for the things you rarely need.
About a third open to two thirds closed is a reliable starting point. It is enough display to make the run look considered and enough closed volume to absorb what the room genuinely collects. The failure mode is almost always too much open shelving: it photographs beautifully empty, and within a month it is holding the things that were previously on the floor.

It is worth bringing a list of what equipment is going in — screen size, what the components are, whether there is a soundbar or a games console — to the measure. Those details change the cabinet, and finding out later means visible cable.
A shelf carrying a full row of books wants support at roughly 30 to 32 inch intervals in typical cabinet material. Longer runs need a thicker shelf, a mid-span support, or a rail at the back edge. This is not a detail worth leaving to chance: a bowed shelf is visible from across the room and it is the thing people notice about a bookcase years later.

Too much open shelving is first and by a wide margin. It is the look everyone wants from a photograph, and photographs show shelves styled with eleven objects rather than lived with. The fix is almost always converting a lower section to closed doors, and it would have cost nothing to design that way.
The screen mounted too high comes next, usually above a fireplace. It solves a layout problem and creates a viewing one, and it cannot be adjusted once the cabinetry is built around it.
One depth throughout is third. A whole wall built at media depth to accommodate one component section makes a modest living room feel noticeably tighter, and the extra depth in the bookcase sections is not capacity — it is just space you cannot walk in.
Then cable management left until afterwards, which becomes surface trunking or a bundle of cable visible behind an open shelf. And equipment sealed into an unventilated cupboard, which is a heat problem rather than an aesthetic one.
The last is under-spanned shelving. A run of long unsupported shelves loaded with books will bow within a couple of years, and the only real fix afterwards is adding supports that were not part of the design.

The first is spans and shelf thickness, because this is the room where shelves are loaded with books and looked at from a distance. Four situations account for most of the work locally, and they call for genuinely different ratios of open to closed storage.
The single-purpose front room comes first, and it is the rarest. Older houses through the established parts of the city sometimes still have a formal living room that is not the family's main room, and those take the highest proportion of open display, because there is little in them that needs hiding.
The everything room is the commonest by far. In most Port Coquitlam family homes one room is the television room, the playroom, the homework room and the place guests sit, all in the same twelve by sixteen feet. The compact living room is fourth: townhouses, condominiums and lower-floor suites where the room is small enough that depth is the binding constraint.
