The gas fireplace flanked by two empty alcoves is practically a signature of Westwood Plateau and Eagle Ridge living rooms — space that has been begging for shelving since the drywall went up. We fill those alcoves with balanced built-ins: closed cabinets at the bottom for the clutter, open shelves above for the things worth looking at, and a mantel line that ties the whole wall together.
In Ranch Park’s split-levels the living room often steps down from the entry, which makes a low, horizontal media unit the natural anchor — long and grounded rather than tall and imposing.
